A girl who carries the Sun within her!

help during the war

“The goodness for me is like the air we breathe. This is something that is difficult to live without,” Yuliana Kolesnikova, an 11th-grader from Kharkiv, says. These deep and sincere words of hers deeply move us!

She is a girl with the Sun inside her — the sun of kindness that aspires to warm people around her and illuminate their way! When you get to know Yuliana better, the strength this fragile girl has is just amazing. This strength gives her the power to make changes in her life and society. And that goodness is her superpower! Yuliana is an ambassador of Giving Tuesday, the children’s charity event. She already implemented lots of charitable initiatives, and continued to provide help during the war.

“An ambassador is a person who not only does something for themselves, but inspires others as well,” Yuliana explains. “I am happy that my lyceum, my class, my teacher Lyudmila Anatoliyivna Domnych, and the director of my lyceum, Yulia Anatoliyivna Hutnyk, have always supported me and participated in all initiatives. I am happy that we have done so many good things, and it is nice that the students of our lyceum enjoy doing good things. They like it, and that’s probably the most important thing!”

“Goodness is not only about me; it is about everyone!”

“My mother told me that I was very caring when I was little; I was worried about stray animals, those who needed help, even the potholes on the roads because cars could get stuck,” Yuliana talks about herself. “Since I was a child, I liked to watch TV shows with my mother, and I always asked her which of the characters is right and who is wrong. Why are some people jealous of others? What should be done so there is no more evil? Even then, it seemed to me that I wanted to do something to make the whole world kinder, even then. I felt that goodness was not only about me personally, but it was also about everyone. I was always hurt to see someone hurt, and I was always happy when something good happened to someone.”

“One time when I was still in junior school, I decided to give a chocolate bar to our janitor Kyrylo. I remember how hard he worked, and how children did not always treat him with respect. It seemed to me that such a big adult man also needed attention. When I gave him the chocolate, he gave me a caramel candy in return. It was a sign: it is impossible to give away all the goodness or exhaust it, it always returns! As for me and Kyrylo, we are still friends now, we always greet each other and talk. Someone once said that the boundaries between people exist only in our heads. We are people. We speak, so our language should be the language of good. Why should it be otherwise?!”

“I want. I can. I help!”

“I was always happy to help someone,” the girl says. “I felt needed by the world this way. I remember seeing an auction held on the Inter channel to gather money for a device for children. I told my mother that I would really like to help somehow, and she gave me an auction lot for my birthday. That’s how I got to the shoot of the movie called Oriental Sweets. It made me realize that everyone could do good things! I started speaking at charity events. Even then, I understood that you could help not only with money, but also with your time, creativity, and even with words. What is most important is that helping gives joy to your soul and warmth to your heart.”

Despite her young age, Yuliana has already implemented many charitable initiatives. “There have been and still are a lot of ideas on how to join efforts to do good things and change the life of the community and our city for the better,” Yuliana says. “There are so many initiatives, I don’t even have time to write about all of them. I really liked the Sam_I initiative, and the fact that we ourselves can do something, not having to wait for the actions from authorities, or from the city government. I offered to collect scrap paper in our apartment block, then sell it and use the funds to make improvements in the surrounding area. I was very pleased that the residents of the building joined me, and we started collecting the paper. The war got in the way, but we will continue after the Victory.

Even before the war, I had an idea that each person could take a piece of land under their patronage, “adopt” the area, so to speak, and take care of it. Then it would be clean all around.

Generally, I love all my initiatives. And if I see that my idea helps at least one person, then I believe it was not in vain!”

It is impossible to be happy alone!

February 24 changed all our lives, and Yuliana was not an exception…

“At the beginning of the war, I was completely at a loss,” the girl admits. “It was so weird for me that some people could not distinguish between good and evil. I started writing to celebrities and asking them to not be silent, to do something because only all of us together could stop this. I am continuing to write to them. Moreover, I tried to help my neighbors, especially the elderly ones. I’ve realized that when things are difficult and scary, you need to help those whose situation is even more difficult, so it becomes easier for you. After my home was partially destroyed… I moved to Sumy. My brothers went to the war. There are things that I can tell only after the Victory. But I do a lot to make it closer. Help during the war concerns each of us!”

“When I moved from Kharkiv to Sumy, I realized that it’s impossible to be happy alone. I did not know what to do with myself. I was safe, but thoughts about my native town Kharkiv and its people haunted me. I noticed that my niece missed her toys and realized that toys are of a primary significance for children. So I held the Subway Children campaign and collected 49 bags of toys and clothes for the Kharkiv kids. Then I shot a documentary film called People of Sumy About Kharkiv that already participated in many film festivals, and on November 29, precisely on Giving Tuesday, it was screened in the Druzhba cinema. I told the audience about the Giving Tuesday initiative and offered them to watch some videos about goodness, which I translated into Ukrainian.

We collected some money for the Armed Forces during the screening, and wrote a letter to Kharkiv and the people of Kharkiv together with the audience.”

“And then with the support of the city’s residents, I started other campaigns. The Victory campaign was about children’s drawings; they depicted how they see Ukraine after the Victory and talked about their plans for the future. As for me, these drawings are not only about the future, but about the present as well, because we already won, because we are Ukraine! We fight for the good! I’m grateful to Goodacity for the microgrant that allowed me to purchase materials for my campaigns. The Hands of Kindness initiative, which took place in Sumy Library #17, was very moving for me. Children painted their palms and wrote words of gratitude to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. These drawings went to the front line together with the warmth of children’s hands. We also held the Letter to Kharkiv campaign in Sumy City Gallery and the library. Residents of the city of Sumy wrote a lot of warm and supportive words to the people of Kharkiv and Kharkiv itself.”

“I held several Jobby games during this marathon of good deeds. This game teaches teens about safe employment; it was created by teens for teens. I am one of the developers of this game, so I gave my knowledge and time to the teenagers of Sumy and the displaced kids. And I’m already planning the next activities for children and teenagers: our new game called 33 Misfortunes will be printed soon. It was developed by our team during the war to teach children safe behavior during wartime.”

“The Gratitude initiative became long-lasting. People write to me and tell me about people who have helped them or are helping them now in these hard times. This is important, because goodness begins with gratitude. All the stories will be included in a collection that will be printed, and the money from the sale will go to support the people in need.”

Ukraine is about goodness!

“I have been participating in Giving Tuesday for many years, and it seems to me that doing good is becoming common,” the girl says. “This day, Giving Tuesday, is a day of “tasting the good”, so to speak. If you feel joy when your kindness makes someone smile or when it makes someone feel better, then you will never stop!

Doing good is very exciting. The eyes of happy people make you happy! I believe that doing good will soon be as common as breathing. A Giving Tuesday will turn into a Giving Week, a Year, and then a Giving Life!”

At the end of the conversation, we asked Yuliana what inspires her the most.

“My family inspires me the most. There are so many of us, we are different, but we have always supported each other and continue to do so,” the girl says. “We help others, whatever the situation is. I am inspired by my mother, who says that a person is like a box of pencils: if there is no black pencil there, then a person will not draw anything, that is they will not do anything black in their life.

I am currently an 11th grade student . The war disrupted my plans, but I am certain that I will always help people and will never leave them in trouble, regardless of who I become. And I love Kharkiv and Ukraine dearly. I am proud to be a Ukrainian, because Ukraine is about goodness!”
